Food

Temporada 1

Food production is one of the key activities that helps face the climate crisis. By nature, plant production is a way of capturing CO2 and absorbing it in soils. However, agribusiness proposes a model that demands large amounts of fossil inputs (fertilizers) and that requires homogenizing the territory, that is, that there are no other species of plants or insects that compete with the monoculture. This makes agriculture one of the main CO2-generating activities and a driver of deforestation and loss of insect and seed diversity.

The case of Jalisco is iconic due to the recent boost received by the agro-industrial model, where state authorities are allocating resources and paving the way to make this model the only one in the state. Mainly it is the production of goods that are presented as food in this region: avocado, berries, sugar cane and agave; four products that neither nourish nor improve the food situation of those who consume them or those who produce them. The consequences are evident in the contamination of water by pesticides and fertilizers, the loss of forests and soils and the disintegration of the communities that lose their lands to a model of insatiable extraction.
