Power generation is the main CO2 emitting activity; however, the response to the climate crisis necessarily depends on rethinking the source and quantity of energy we consume. The region of the Gulf of Mexico has received strong economic benefits from the extraction of fossil fuels, which has made the industry an important part of the identity of the area. Ironically, this area is one of the most affected by the climate crisis, specifically, the southern area of Tabasco is threatened by increases in the sea level, hurricanes, and overflowing rivers.
The flagship project of the current federal government is in this state, the controversial Dos Bocas refinery, which places Mexico in a difficult position to achieve the commitments acquired in the Paris Agreement, and also has a reduced economic viability, given the composition of the oil available in the Mexican fields.
