Women of fire

Narrated by Natalia Lafourcade

Women of fire

It all begins the dawn of April 15, 2011. After years of illegal logging and the destruction of 70% of its forests at the hands of organized crime, some women from Cherán, a Purépecha community in Michoacán, decided to put a stop to the loggers. No one knows how many or who they were. They always said: it was not one, we were all. At that time, they did not imagine that this brave act of laying down their bodies would be the first gesture of a peaceful resistance that would forever transform the life of their community.

That day ten years ago, Cherán set out to defend the forest, the territory and life. Since then, the community has been working on a collective and non-violent alternative to deal with the complicity of the authorities with criminal groups, which reveals the capture of the State. Women of fire lights a path to hope in a country that has turned its territory into a great clandestine tomb, where being a woman and being indigenous is a danger in itself. This community snatched its destiny from those who are destroying everything.
